Wednesday, May 27 declared public holiday in Ghana for Eid-ul-Adha celebration

Workers and students across Ghana are set to enjoy another break later this month after the government officially declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, a statutory public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebration.

The announcement was made by the Ministry for the Interior in a statement signed by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, on Friday, May 15, 2026.

“The general public is hereby informed that Wednesday, 27th May 2026, marks Eid-Ul-Adha, which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

Eid-ul-Adha celebration in Ghana

Eid-ul-Adha, widely known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most important events on the Islamic calendar. The celebration honours the devotion and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son in fulfilment of Allah’s command before God provided a ram as a substitute.

The festival is celebrated by Muslims around the world through prayers, acts of charity, and the sharing of meals with relatives, neighbours, and the less privileged in society.
